Hmmm, can you imagine the winking eyes of dragonflies and feel the promise they offer?
The winter blues. They always take hold around this time of year. It seems like winter has gone on forever but in reality is only at the halfway mark. Things feel particularly gloomy this year given the harsh winter we are enduring, the Trump factor and the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in another nose dive.
You know the feeling. You wake up, look at the alarm clock and think: Maybe I’ll just pull the covers over my head and stay here for the day. Maybe if I concentrate hard enough and petition the weather gods, I can fast-forward through the back half of winter and wake up in the spring.
Alas, there is no escaping the icy grip of winter and no way to speed up its passage. The best I can offer is the opportunity to take refuge in the winged dragons of summer. Take flight for a few moments in your imagination to be eye to eye with these dragonflies.

Picture yourself with this Ruby Meadowhawk clinging with bristly, black legs to a fresh, green leaf. Imagine it winking at you with its comically large compound eyes and promising: Spring will come again. Summer will follow. Trust me – all will be well.

Picture yourself hanging out with this American Emerald as it dangles from the limb of a tree on a sunny, woodland path. Imagine it winking its emerald green eyes at you and promising: Spring will come again. Summer will follow. Trust me – all will be well.

Picture yourself seated on the grass soaking up the same summer sun that warms the filigree wings of this Blue Dasher. Imagine it winking its turquoise eyes at you and promising: Spring will come again. Summer will follow. Trust me – all will be well.

Picture yourself sharing a moment of peace and solitude with this green-form Canada Darner. Imagine it winking its speckled eyes at you and promising: Spring will come again. Summer will follow. Trust me – all will be well.
Dragonflies are said to be a metaphor for a way-shower – an entity that encourage us to break out of our old, safe shells, embrace change and fly with our own wings. Today let them be the ethereal force that helps us break free of the winter blues and live for a moment in the glow of the summer sun and the promise of better days that surely await us.
